Over the years, podcasts have been one of the biggest mediums of entertainment. Whether it’s a talk show with a group of friends or a weekly narrative, people can’t get enough of their favorite shows. Founded in 2015, International Podcast Day (September 30) was created to share the love of podcasts. We decided to showcase five great podcasts you should start following today.
Each week Alex Denney meets new talking animals on a deserted island. One day before recording, Denney asks for a suggestion word from listeners, which will be the focal point of the episode. Aliza Pearl (Geek and Sundry), Celeste Pechous (Work In Progress), and Doug Morency (Degrassi: The Next Generation) are among those who've appeared on the improvised podcast.
Kelly Nugent (TBS's Superpunch, El Rey Nation) delivers a chilling story with Exile. The narrative podcast follows a woman exiled to a world full of terror at every corner. Nugent wrote, produced, mixed, and performed the entire podcast with the help of Analise Nelson composing the music. This podcast is best listened to with great headphones.
Hector Navarro (Nerdist, El Rey Nation) and Keller Knoblock (Geek and Sundry) have one goal: to watch Empire Magazine’s 500 Greatest Movies of All Time. Each podcast finds the duo tackling a new movie with some special guests, including comic book writer Jody Houser and VENN host Emma Fyffe. Debuting in 2018, the podcast is slated to conclude in 2028.
Each week, Communion After Dark brings some of the latest in industrial, EBM, dark electro, and more. Hosting the show are DJ Mark Paradise (The Castle), DJ Maus (Obscura Undead, STRANGELOVE), and DJ Tom Gold (Resident DJ at The Castle). Listeners will also be treated to guest DJ sets from familiar names in the alternative-electronic scene. Recently, Tom Shear (Assemblage 23), Jasyn Bangert (God Module), and Raph Beck (DarkTunes) have appeared on the show.
Since 2011, The Comedy Button has been bringing delivering a plethora of laughs to podcast listeners. Hosts Brian Altano, Scott Bromley, Ryan Scott, Max Scoville, and Kristin Van De Yar try to make sense of the various things going on in this world. Aside from the weekly podcast, The Comedy Button also has bonus episodes, including movie commentaries, in their webstore.
