Summer Game Fest 2024: The five best announcements
The 2024 installment of Summer Game Fest took over Los Angeles’ YouTube Theater yesterday for a presentation of some previously announced titles as well as some surprising reveals. We look at five announcements that stood out during the two-hour event.
Civilization 7
Another installment of the classic Civilization franchise is coming soon. While a gameplay reveal is slated for August, fans will be glad to know the title is arriving next year to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam). This follows 2016's Civilization 6, which earned Best Strategy Game awards at The Game Awards, Game Critics Awards, and D.I.C.E. Awards.
B. Jenet and Vox Reaper announced for Fatal Fury: City of Wolves
Fatal Fury? In THIS economy? For decades, longtime Fatal Fury fans have begged for another installment in the beloved fighting game franchise, and in 2025, their prayers will be answered with Fatal Fury: City of Wolves. As expected, recognizable names such as Joe Higashi and Terry Bogard (who's making the leap to Street Fighter 6) will be part of the roster alongside newcomers Vox Reaper and Preecha. B. Jenet, who debuted in 1999's Garou: Mark of the Wolves, will also return to the franchise. The game is slated to be released on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind
With the success of Streets of Rage 4 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, it was only a matter of time before another old school franchise got the retro beat 'em up treatment. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind will find the Power Rangers trying to take down Robo-Rita and Rita Repulsa, who want to wipe the beloved heroes from the timeline forever. The game will be released on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam) later this year.
Tears of Metal
Tears of Metal merges hack-and-slash action with rougelike elements in what looks to be one wild ride. In the game, players must reclaim their island with the aid of medieval Scottish warriors, and they can do so alone or with friends. The game is being developed by Paper Cult, who previously released Bloodroots back in 2021. Tears of Metal is slated for a 2025 release on Steam.
Cuffbust
Too Star Games, who unveiled the wild world of Choo-Choo Charles in 2022, is back with one colorful prison break with Cuffbust. With 20 player lobbies, players can invite the entire crew for one massive escape with the aid of destructible environments, various ways to escape, and proximity chat. Cuffbust, which is destined to be the next big multiplayer hit, is slated for a 2025 release on Steam.
