Sega announces Virtua Fighter project at Tokyo Game Show 2020

At their presentation at Tokyo Game Show 2020 today, Sega announced plans to revive Virtua Fighter.

The announcement, which you can see below, reveals Sega’s plans to incorporate the game in the eSports world. The translated message reads:

“Virtua Fighter x Esports project" announced! Virtua Fighter, which was born as the world's first 3D fighting game in 1993, will be restarted in Japan to commemorate the 60th anniversary of SEGA's founding. Stay tuned for future updates!”

The last proper Virtua Fighter game was Virtua Fighter 5, which was released in arcades in 2006 and home consoles in 2007. The franchise made the jump to mobile phones with 2011’s Virtua Fighter: Cool Champ and 2014’s Virtua Fighter: Fever Combo – Mobile. In 2016, Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown Version B was released as a minigame in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.
