Review: Bocchi The Rock! - episode four ("Jumping Girl(s)")
Episode three of Bocchi the Rock! found the band reuniting with Kita, who abandoned them because of their lack of guitar skills. With the help of Bocchi, Kita is looking to strengthen their work on the axe and help bring Kessoku Band to the forefront of the local music scene. Before that could happen, though, there's some important matters at hand. Our review of episode three can be seen here. Our coverage of Bocchi the Rock! can be found here.

With the band fully operational, it was time to think of their overall image, and that's where Nijika showed off their ideas at the band meeting. One of Nijika's first priorities with the band image was creating band merch. While it was a simple zip tie posing as a wristband, it's the thought that counts. Band merch is always a fun topic for bands of all types. Some bands wait until they've gained a solid fanbase in their area before deciding on throwing down some T-shirts at the merch table. Other bands will have an entire merch store filled with items before their first show.
Another important part of the image involves the band photo. With a camera in hand, Nijika took a slew of excellent band photos outside. For bands, the press photo can be crucial. It showcases the band's overall vibe to potential listeners. Some bands go all out with photos with special effects while others choose to go retro with Polaroid photos.
While Nijika held things down with the band's image, Bocchi was still trying to write lyrics for the band's first song. The hardest part was discovering the right vibe. Would it be a happy-go-lucky tune or would it be one full of dread? Some of the biggest songs out there were written under interesting situations. Noel Gallagher challenged themselves to write Oasis' hit single “Supersonic” in under 10 minutes while Beastie Boys wrote their hit "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" on paper napkins at the Michael Todd Room in the Palladium.
While eating with Ryo, who was tasked with creating the music, Bocchi showcased lyrics with some uncertainty. While glancing at Bocchi's lyrics, Ryo discussed their time with a previous band, who were more concerned about writing hit singles than music they truly cared about. During the talk, Ryo delivered one of the show's most memorable lines with "Abandoning your uniqueness is equivalent to dying." The episode ends with Bocchi delivering their final lyrics to a nod of approval from Ryo.
The theme for this episode is uniqueness. Whether it's lyrics to a song or a simple band photo, everyone has their own way of showcasing their individuality. Following a trend for a quick buck can limit creative potential for anyone.
