Five noticeable draft picks in WWE Draft history
Since 2002, the WWE Draft has given both Raw and Smackdown some fresh matches and storylines. It also altered the careers of many with new opportunities waiting for them on the other brand. For some, it came with a new attitude. For others, it was leaving their tag team partner behind for a singles run. With the WWE Draft returning, we look at five wrestlers who had a standout 12 months after they were drafted.
Shelton Benjamin (2004)
In 2002, Shelton Benjamin burst onto the main roster as one-half of The World's Greatest Tag Team with Charlie Hass. With two tag team title reigns and two WrestleMania matches under their belt, Benjamin's stock was quickly rising in the company. At the 2004 WWE Draft, Benjamin and Hass were traded to separate shows ending their tag team.
While Hass continued down the tag team route with Rico on Smackdown, Benjamin's path was one filled with memorable moments on Raw. Shortly after the draft, Benjamin scored a shocking win over Triple H in the main event of Raw. Benjamin would go on to defeat The Game two more times (once via count out and once via DQ) and defeat Hall of Famer Ric Flair before setting their sights on singles gold. At Taboo Tuesday, Benjamin was voted by fans to take on then-Intercontential Champion Chris Jericho. After winning the title, Benjamin would hold the belt for 244 days with victories over Christian, Maven, and Chris Jericho.
Edge (2004)
After being sidelined for a year due to surgery, Edge made their return at the 2004 WWE Draft, which found them being drafted to Raw. Months following their return, the wrestler earned tag team and Intercontinental Championship gold. That fall, however, Edge slowly showed signs of a villainous side, and they quickly shocked fans by turning heel. This heel turn also gave wrestling fans one of the most memorable entrance themes ever with Alter Bridge's "Metalingus". At WrestleMania 21, which happened a little over a year after being drafted, Edge made history by winning the first-ever Money In The Bank match.
Jeff Hardy (2008)
By the time the 2008 WWE Draft took place, Jeff Hardy already accumulated a bevy of highlights in their illustrious career, including being a multiple-time tag team champion with their brother Matt. While they've earned a plethora of singles championships, the big one was still on their radar.
After being drafted to Smackdown, Hardy challenged for the WWE Championship against then-champion Triple H on a number of occasions but fell short. At Armageddon 2008, however Hardy defeated Triple H and Edge in a triple threat match to win their first-ever WWE Championship. Unfortunately, they lost the title the following month thanks to Matt's involvement. At WrestleMania 25, Jeff would lose to their brother in an Extreme Rules match. Close to a year after being drafted, Hardy would go on to win the World Heavyweight Championship from Edge at Extreme Rules 2009. Unfortunately, they lost the belt minutes later to CM Punk, who cashed in their Money In The Bank briefcase.
Kofi Kingston (2008)
Following an impressive undefeated streak in WWE's version of ECW, Kingston jumped to Raw in the 2008 Supplemental Draft. The future WWE Champion wasted little time making a name for themselves by defeating Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Championship at Night of Champions, which took place days after they were drafted.
After losing the belt in Summerslam, Kingston formed a tag team with CM Punk, and the duo would go on to win the World Tag Team Championship from Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase. After losing the tag championship, Kofi would have a stellar showing at WrestleMania 25 in the Money In The Bank match. Close to a year after being drafted, Kingston would beat MVP to win the United States Championship for the first time in their career.
Alexa Bliss (2016)
Alexa Bliss stands out on the list for being drafted twice within eight months. In August 2016, Bliss was drafted to Smackdown from NXT, which separated them from the team of Blake and Murphy. On their own on the main roster, Bliss earned victories over Becky Lynch and took part in the women's elimination tag team match at Survivor Series before ending 2016 by winning the SmackDown Women's Championship. Bliss would hold the championship until WrestleMania 33 where they lost it to Naomi in a six-pack challenge.
Several days after WrestleMania 33, however, Bliss was involved in the Superstar Shake-up, which sent them over to Raw. As part of a new roster, Bliss dominated by winning the Raw Women's Championship by the end of April. This made Bliss the first woman to win both the Raw and SmackDown Women's Championships.
