F-Zero returns after nearly 20 years as a battle royale with F-Zero 99
For years, video game fans have been pleading for another installment of the beloved F-Zero franchise on Nintendo. Today, their wishes may (or may not have) come true.
F-Zero 99, which is out now exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, is a battle royale remake of the classic F-Zero title on the Super Nintendo. Much like Tetris 99 and Pac-Man 99, 99 players will race towards being the only person left on the track. Players can also customize their vehicle with various cosmetic options.
The last F-Zero game released was 2004’s F-Zero Climax, which was only released in Japan on the Game Boy Advance. In a recent interview with VGC, former F-Zero art director Takaya Imamura believed Mario Kart overshadowed the fans’ desire for another game in the F-Zero franchise:
I think it’s because Mario Kart is Nintendo’s most popular racing game, and a new F-Zero would cost a fortune.
