Yesterday, the 2023 installment of the Summer Game Fest brought a slew of amazing announcements to Los Angeles’ YouTube Theater. While the event brought some previously announced moments, it also surprised the 6,000 in attendance and the plethora of people watching at home with some surprising reveals. We look at five of the best announcements made during Summer Game Fest 2023.

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando

John Carpenter hasn't been shy about their love for video games; the beloved director has shown high praise for the Sonic The Hedgehog and Jax & Dexter titles and helped work on F.E.A.R. 3. With the help of publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive, Carpenter is launching their own title called John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando. In this FPS, players must take down the Sludge God and its accompanying minions. John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is slated for a 2024 release on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Sand Land

Akira Toriyama’s beloved manga series Sand Land will gain an action RPG title thanks to ILCA and Bandai Namco Entertainment. In the game, players will control Beelzebub in their quest to save Sand Land from a water shortage. The game, which uses Unreal Engine 5, will arrive on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. While fans wait for the video game, a Sand Land anime film will arrive on August 18 in theaters across Japan.

Palworld

Palworld was easily the standout title at Summer Game Fest with a packed YouTube Theater completely on board with the game’s concept. In the title, players run into monsters known as Pals that will be beneficially on their journey. Some Pals can help the player fly around the world while others pack guns. Sonic Superstars

Sonic Superstars brings Sonic fans to some familiar territories with side-scrolling action in a 2.5D world. Developed by Sonic Team, the title lets players wander into North Star Islands alone or with up to three other friends via local multiplayer for the first time in the Sonic franchise. Sonic Superstars will be released later this year on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
