The forthcoming Super Mario Bros. film will now be unveiled next year.

Announced today, the film, which stars Chris Pratt as Super Mario, will be released in April 2023. An official statement from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto reads:

“This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.”

The animated film, which is being produced by Illumination, was originally scheduled to be released this December. Aside from Pratt, the film stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike. Longrunning Mario voice actor Charles Martinet will make cameo appearances in the film.

This will be the third overall Mario film following the 1986 anime film Super Mario Bros.: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! (Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!) and the 1993 cult classic Super Mario Bros.: The Movie.
