Summer Ghost to arrive on Blu-Ray and digital platforms on November 1

GKIDS and Shout Factory will bring Summer Ghost to homes this fall.

Announced yesterday, the anime short film will arrive on Blu-ray and digital platforms on November 1. The film will be released in both subbed and dubbed formats. Pre-orders for the title can be found here. Bonus features for the release include the To You Before Dawn documentary, a feature animatic, and an interview with Summer Ghost producer loundraw. Summer Ghost was written by Hirotaka “Otsuichi” Adachi (Goth, Zoo) with music from Akira Kosemura, Itoko Toma, Guiano, and Hideya Kojima.

The 40-minute short film spawned a manga adaptation and two novels written by Adachi. The film had its North American debut at Anime Expo this summer. Summer Ghost also held screenings at the Leeds International Film Festival and Annecy International Film Festival.

A synopsis for the film reads:

An urban legend says that lighting fireworks at an abandoned airfield will beckon the “summer ghost,” a spirit that can answer any question. Three teenagers, Tomoya, Aoi, and Ryo, each have their own reason to show up one day. When a ghost named Ayane appears, she reveals she is only visible to those “who are about to touch their death.” Compelled by the ghost and her message, Tomoya begins regularly visiting the airfield to uncover the true purpose of her visits.

Inspired by one of his own drawings, this remarkable directorial debut from the celebrated illustrator loundraw brings his lush visual sensibility to a poignant supernatural drama about the struggles of growing up, and the importance of living life to the fullest.

Summer Ghost won the Gold Audience Award for Short Film at the Fantasia International Film Festival.
