Sega is working on film adaptations of two ‘90s titles alongside Picturestart.

Announced today, film adaptations of Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone are currently in the works. The Space Channel 5 film, which will be known as Channel 5, deals with a fast-food worker taking down aliens with the power of viral dances. Barry Battles (The Baytown Outlaws) and Nir Paniry (Extracted) are set to co-write the film. Comix Zone follows “a jaded comic book creator and a young, queer writer of color who, when sucked into the final issue of his popular series, must put aside their differences to stop a dangerous supervillain from sowing complete destruction.” The film will be written by Mae Catt (Young Justice, Dragons: The Nine Realm).

Released in 1999, Space Channel 5 was originally released on the Sega Dreamcast before landing on the PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance. The music game featured a cameo from pop singer Michael Jackson. In 2002, a sequel titled Space Channel 5: Part 2 was released on the PlayStation 2 and Sega Dreamcast. In 2020, a VR title called Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash was released.

Released in 1995, Comix Zone was one of the last games to be released for the Sega Genesis. The game was released with a special CD featuring songs from Danzig, Lords of Acid, and God Lives Underwater. Comic Zone was recently released as part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service.
