Episode one of Bocchi the Rock! introduced viewers to Hitori Gotō, a socially anxious high-schooler with a grand ability of rocking the guitar under their online alias guitarhero. With such musical talent, they landed a spot with the local band Kessoku Band. After their debut show, though, Hitori is wondering what's next for the band? Catch our review of episode two below. Our review of episode one can be read here.

Warning: The review features spoilers about the episode.

The episode begins with Bocchi having a conversation with bandmates Nijika and Ryo. After some brief talk about school, it was time to discuss the future of the band. One issue discussed was the inevitable pay-to-play tactics that most bands have to face. Pay-to-play has been a hot topic for smaller bands around the world for decades. While few bands like Trivium and Silverchair were lucky to snag a label deal in high school, many young musicians still find themselves facing this dilemma especially when it’s opening for a noticeable touring act. Many musicians believe they shouldn't have to pay out of pocket for unsold tickets when the show promoter should be the one taking full responsibility. As a former show promoter myself, the concept only makes it harder for the band to put on a proper set if they're losing money on it.

During the conversation, two huge topics came up: finding a new vocalist and finding a way to keep the band safe financially. For bands, whether they're in school or rockin' out as a side gig, saving up money is vital. From buying new equipment to securing time in the recording studio, setting aside some weekly cash can go a long way.

For Bocchi, talking about getting a job didn't sit right with them. High schoolers today are more likely to have a part-time gig than high schoolers in the past. It often teaches them a solid work ethic and the value of the dollar. Bocchi's immense social anxiety, however, makes it hard for them to even communicate with their bandmates at times.

Bocchi agrees to work alongside their bandmates at the local club Starry, which exudes the kind of intimate vibes found at spots such as the defunct Maxwells in Hoboken, New Jersey and Whisky A Go-Go in Los Angeles, California. During work, they witness the rock band Alexandism perform at the club to an enthusiastic crowd. As they watch the band deliver a grand performance on stage, it made them question their recent time on the same stage. Bocchi became determined to never allow that to happen again.

Overall, the episode does an excellent job of introducing the financial side of being in a band. Whether it's spending hundreds of dollars at the music shop or earning a few bucks after playing a show, money has been a strong element in local shows and an even bigger force when it comes to touring both locally and globally. The episode concludes with a search for a brand-new vocalist. Will Bocchi prove that they have what it takes to lead their new band to dazzling new heights?
