Nintendo announces The Legend of Zelda film from producer Avi Arad
Following the mega success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, another Nintendo project will get the film treatment.
Announced yesterday, Nintendo announced plans to release a film based on The Legend of Zelda. Avi Arad and Shigeru Miyamoto will co-produce the film via Arad Productions Inc. and Nintendo respectfully. Wes Ball, who is best known for directing the Maze Runner film trilogy, will be the film’s director. Screenwriter Derek Connolly, who co-wrote the Jurassic World trilogy and Pokémon Detective Pikachu, is working on the film’s script. Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. will distribute the film in theaters worldwide.
Miyamoto delivered this statement on social media:
I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films.
I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.
Since debuting in 1986, the Legend of Zelda franchise has sold 150 million copies worldwide. Back in May, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released on the Nintendo Switch. The title has sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide so far.
