Mario Kart gets The Last Of Us treatment thanks to Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live decided to give one of the biggest video game franchises a shockingly dark turn on last night’s episode.

With The Last of Us Pedro Pascal hosting, they decided to reimagine Mario Kart as the popular HBO series. The end result is one filled with beloved characters in the Mario franchise as “complex, dramatic HBO characters.” The full sketch, which stars Pascal, can be seen below.

Since its debut in 1992, the Mario Kart franchise has sold over 164 million copies worldwide. The last game in the franchise is Mario Kart 8, which sold over 50 million copies worldwide between the Wii U and Nintendo Switch versions.

Debuting on HBO last month, The Last of Us has seen universal acclaim from critics and fans of the video game. A second season was recently announced. The next season is slated to be based on The Last of Us Part II, which was released on the PlayStation 4 in 2020. A remake of 2013’s The Last of Us titled The Last of Us Part I was released last September on the PlayStation 5. A PC port will be released on March 28.

Super Mario will return to the big screen with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is set for an April 7 release in the United States. The Super Mario Bros. Movie stars Chris Pratt as Super Mario with support from stars such as Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Voice talent Charles Martinet, who has been the voice of Super Mario in the video game franchise for 30 years, will appear in the movie in undisclosed roles.
